Nigerians top list of foreigners arrested for drug smuggling in India

Nigerians have reportedly topped the list of foreigners arrested for drug smuggling in Navi Mumbai over the past five years.

According to the sources from the anti-narcotic cell of Navi Mumbai police, a total of 66 narcotic related cases were registered between 2012 and April this year in the city. Nigerians were involved in 14 of these cases, the police said.

Barely a week ago, the police arrested one Nigerian from Kopar Khairane who had come to sell mephedrone rock and powder. Around 25g of the drug in powder form and 85g in rock form was seized from his possession.

Tushar Doshi, deputy commissioner of police (special branch) said, “When it comes to drug smuggling by foreign nationals, by and large all the criminals are from Africa in general and from Nigeria in particular.

“The number of foreign nationals including those from Africa has also increased in the city over the past two years.”
The police said these Nigerians work in networks which also operate in other cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.
Apart from their countrymen, several Indians are also working in those networks.

Maya More, police inspector from the anti-narcotic cell said, “These criminals collect their drugs from people in their networks and then smuggle those to different cities.
“The biggest problem faced while trying to get details about their business is the language issue. We cannot interrogate them properly after their arrests, as many of them cannot speak proper English or any Indian language.”
Officials from the city special branch told Hindustan Times that presently, around 950 foreign nationals from nearly 70 counties are staying in Navi Mumbai and around 50 of them are Africans.
Amit Shellar, police sub-inspector from the anti-narcotic cell said, “Most of the Nigerians arrested for drug smuggling had come to India on a business visa.
“Initially, they would export garments from Mumbai to their country. However, when their business would fail, they would trade drugs for easy money.”
According to the crime branch official, such networks are operating in the city through word-of-mouth publicity.
“They initially target students from the affluent families and help in forming a habit of taking the drug. Once they create a good number of customers, they keep selling it to them,” an officer said on condition of anonymity.
Apart from drug smuggling, several Nigerians were also arrested for online cheating, credit card and debit card frauds among others

Ondo APC chieftain, Otunba Dele Ologun denies romance with AD, says I remain a loyal member

The Deputy Director of the Youth committee for Aketi campaign platform during the last year Governorship election campaign in Ondo State, Otunba Dele Ologun has said he will continue to empower members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Ologun said no amount of cheap blackmail and Unwholesome accusation will stop him from touching the lives of members of his party.

The APC chieftain who addressed journalists in Itaogbolu, Akure North said he is a committed party man who will never romance any opposition.
He said his empowerment program where he distributed one hundred Jamb forms to students was borne out of his desire to promote his party and propagate the education agenda of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.
Ologun described as funny, an attempt by some faceless group to discredit his empowerment by accusing him of giving Jamb forms to people affiliated to the Alliance for Democracy (AD) members.
He stressed that even the deaf and dumb knows that the AD doesn’t exist in the state.

He said it is funny that any individual could described as anti-party, an empowerment which has members of the state working committee and leaders of the party in attendance.
He said “the Publicity Secretary of our party, the Youth leader and other members of the state executive committee including leaders of the party were part of those who personally gave out the Jamb forms

“Senator Tayo Alasoadura who was unavoidably absent sent a representative in person of Mr Tayo Fayanju
“Many of our party leaders that were present included ten out of the twelve ward chairmen, State Youth Leader, State PRO, local government party Chairman, local government caretaker chairman and a member of the Ondo State Oil Producing area Development Commission (OSOPADEC)Mr Ogbesetore among others.
“I am promoting my party, as well as the education agenda of Mr. Governor, I am a party loyalist to the core, I dont have any connection with the AD
“I think what is playing out here is the ignorance of some people, there is no way we would empower AD and invite leaders of our great party to come and present the same forms
“It is funny for anyone to think that after giving my total support to Governor Akeredolu during the governorship primaries and to the APC during the gubernatorial election, with our subsequent victory, I will now be empowering AD members
“The one hundred jamb form i distributed was in fulfillment of my campaign promise during the governorship election, why will it now be given to an opposition?” Ologun querried.
The APC chieftain noted that the administration of Akeredolu was built on truth and as such was able to gain the trust of the people.

I am fighting for my life - popular Nollywood Actress cries out

The issues in Mercy Aigbe’s marriage seems to be far from over as the actress husband, Lanre Gentry was remanded in prison during the week for failure to meet his bail condition, in an interview with Punch, the actress revealed more about her husband’s fate and what she went through in his hands.
When Saturday Beats reached out to the popular nollywood actress , she made it known that she has nothing to do with her husband’s predicament. She explained that the matter was reported to the appropriate agencies and they are handling the case according to the law.
She said, “The case is no longer between my husband and I. It is now between the Office of Public Defenders, Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and my husband. The officer is the one handling the case.”
Mercy Aigbe in an emotional laden voice said that she wants her husband to know the gravity of what he has done because till date, she is still coughing out blood due to the beatings she got from him.
“I cannot be washing my dirty linen in public and that is why I do not want to go into details of my marriage. It is not in my place to send him to jail. I only reported to the appropriate authorities and I just need him to show remorse for what he has done to me. He does not know the gravity of what he has done to me, the pains that I feel right now and the trauma I have gone through.

I am still in pains and I am bleeding internally because I am still coughing out blood. Instead of him to be remorseful, he was busy going online to say all sorts of things about me and concocting lies.
He has been fabricating stories to taint my image because he knows I am the one with a reputation at stake. I intentionally did not say anything even though I have proof of everything I have to say. Instead of my husband to show some sense of responsibility and own up to what he did, he was busy dragging my name in the mud,” Aigbe said.
She told Saturday Beats that she endured a lot in her seven-year-old marriage but she stayed put because of her children and the people who look up to her as a role model. She said, “I endured all the things that I went through in his hands because of my children and also because of the fact that people look up to me as a role model.
I have been through a lot and I pray and fast a lot so that things would go on smoothly. I have been praying and enduring a lot but this last time, the beating was brutal and he almost killed me.”
The actress told Saturday Beats that Gentry kept claiming that she was promiscuous but that it is a false statement aimed at tarnishing her image. Aigbe said it was never reported that she was promiscuous while she was a single lady, so why would she start such an act as a married woman.
“Before I got married, there was no scandal about me being promiscuous, no one could say that I was sleeping around; so why would I now do such as a married woman? If I were that promiscuous like he claims, how come no journalist has ever reported such stories about me? I have been working so hard to build my brand and now he wants to rubbish it,” she said.

She said that he husband’s major problem is his anger and although she had advised him to go for anger management classes, he refused.
“The problem with him is that he cannot control his anger and I have advised him on several occasions to see a therapist or enrol in anger management class to learn how to control his temper but he refused.

JAMB recorded low UTME candidates turnout as explosion rocks University of Maiduguri

The multiple explosions that rocks the University of Maiduguri(UNIMAID), on Saturday, delayed the commencement of the Computer-Based Test for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination,(UTME) candidates at centres in the university.

It was reported that three suicide bombers, early today detonated their explosives, at the gate of the University killing a security guard and injuring one soldier.

NAN reports that the six test centres in the university recorded low turnout following the incident.

Mrs Kaka John, a JAMB staff, said that the exam did not commence on time because of the early morning bomb blast, which made many candidates to stay away.

“We were supposed to start very early at 9:00 a.m. but I think because of the fear, the students did not show up. This made us to start around 10 a.m

” Also, the security agencies did not also show up on time because many of them had moved to the scene of the blasts. Also the NSCDC did not show up on time,” she said.

The JAMB Supervisor, at the ETC Centre one and two Haliru Umar, said that about 4,000 students would be sitting for the exam in the centre.
“In this centre this morning, we started with about 250 students. We still have about 17 more sessions for the exams.
” So far, the exercise was very successful as some of them have started coming out.
“We have taken good security measures by providing sufficient security to protect the students to enable them write their exams successfully,” he said.
one of the Candidates miss Halima Isa said she wrote the test in fear but said it was successful.
“We were scared because there was bomb last but I think everything is fine now,” she said.
